Any Doubt That Hillary Isn't Getting a Fair Shake in the MSM?
"Women Know Your Limits" is the title of this startling compilation about Hillary Clinton's treatment by the main stream media, as well as the online world. Thanks to my friend Girl w/ Pen! for pointing this one out.
With this kind of coverage, did Hillary really ever stand a chance?
And for the record, I no longer want to have Keith Olbermann's love child.
Joanne is over at her place, PunditMom, getting ready for her podcast appearance later tonight with fellow MOMocrat Kristen from Motherhood Uncensored.

The first 3 minutes of this video reminded me of why I don't watch TV news. I hate those guys (except Olbermann, but I don't watch him either). The second half is great.

I'm up for a boycott of tv news too. Let's spread the word.
Radio, print, and blogosphere are way better.

Joanne, the link is broken - it looks like youtube suspended it, or something.

You could replace it with this:

Wow. That really pisses me off. I can't stand it when "men" drop the "nagging wives" line.

okay - so I was able to watch the video after trying again.
this piece lost me for lampooning Keith Olbermann and his words to Hillary regarding Ferraro's self-destruction as part of her campaign, and then lost me further when it showed the clip of Hillary saying that the congress is negligent "for not holding the administration responsible" - how did she not participate in that negligence, directly, when she voted to send our troops into an illegal occupation?
Jo - I love you but I can't give this video a pass. it's valid on many levels, but including Keith Olbermann with the likes of Tweety-bigot-Matthews and Joe Sickborough is wrong and I have to say so.
Posted by: Debbie | April 09, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Debbie, of course it's not a perfect video and I didn't mean to say I agreed with every moment. But I think the theme is valid -- Hillary takes a bad rap just for being a woman. Nagging? Compare her to an ex-wife in court? Bitchy? Etc.?? They haven't just stuck their toes in the water on attacking her with gender specific phrases -- they've jumped into the deep end.
Posted by: PunditMom | April 09, 2008 at 11:33 AM
No, yeah, I think there are many valid moments - I just wish they'd not lumped Keith in. It wasn't fair. His words aren't belittling, either to Ms. Clinton *or* Ms. Ferraro, so I don't get why they included him.
Tweety, on the other hand, is a disgusting, misogynistic bigot who has ZERO business being anywhere near a camera/microphone/major "news" (ahem) outlet, -- hey! just like the Republican candidate, Tweety's beloved maverick boyfriend, McCane! Coincidence?
I doubt it.

(a very good reference to Tweety's stomach-churning nasty self, written by Digby, a brilliant woman polit-blogger whom I would prostrate myself before if ever given the opportunity.)

Y'know what makes me really mad?? If the traditional media spoke about racial minorities the way they speak about women they'd be out of their jobs so fast it'd make their heads spin. Where's the respect?? Why aren't people rioting in the streets??? Except me. I have to get dinner and put the kids to bed. Just answered my own question, didn't I. Doesn't stop me being mad though :/

Anyone can edit video or audio snippets and make them tell any story you want them to. It's called propaganda. It is a political tool that frequently works, because it uses imagery that provokes strong emotions (while usually glossing over or wildly distorting facts).
That's what we are seeing here.
The suggestion that Senator Clinton isn't doing as well as she might because the media is "ganging up on a girl" is unworthy, and plainly untrue.
Could it be that Senator Clinton just isn't as popular with Democrats as one would like to believe?

GF, as someone who spent a decade in broadcast journalism, I know full well how pictures and sounds can be altered. Maybe Hillary isn't as popular as some think, but there can be no denying that man men in the media are being totally unfair. You can't edit different words into new ones -- like, nag, bitch and shrew. What would you and others be saying if stereotypically derogatory terms were being used against Obama (which they are not)? I think I can guess. The simple truth is that we, as a country, as more comfortable with sexism than racism.

"The simple truth is that we, as a country, as more comfortable with sexism than racism."
You may be right... but she isn't losing because of her gender. If her gender was the issue, she wouldn't be doing as well as she is doing. If her gender were a huge issue, she wouldn't be a Senator... among a large number of ladies who are Senators, and Members of The House, etc....
If the "media" were throwing slurs at Obama, I would probably say something like "So what else is new in America?"

There's no doubt that Hillary has been unfairly blasted in the media, and it is in no small part because of her gender. But still, that doesn't make her the best candidate. . .

Thank you for taking the time to create a blog post on the video "Mad as Hell/Bitch".
The video was created by two grassroots supporters who met online, IndyRobin and GeekLove08. It took 4 weeks to create the video as we were collaborating via e-mail and we had a lot of material to work with. Both of us are fairly new to YouTube-- I started to create videos in February and this was IndyRobin's first video.
We believe that the message of misogyny, as well as the character assassination of Hillary Clinton, by the media is an important one. We are "mad as hell" that television has become what Edward R. Murrow had warned about in 1958 when he said "This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box."
Thanks to people like you, the video has gone "viral" spreading through the internet, and perhaps inspiring people to speak out against the media.
If you and/or your readers have the opportunity, we would appreciate it very much if you could go to the original video post on YouTube and RATE the video, post a COMMENT on the video, and FAVORITE the video. These actions will help the video earn YouTube "honors" which may help further promote the video online. (You can get to the YouTube site for the video by double clicking the video on your blog.)
Thanks again for your post.
GeekLove08
P.S. The video is not an anti-Obama video, but rather a video against the media bias. No matter who one supports, this type of character assassination and sexism by the media should not be tolerated. However, for those who do support Hillary Clinton, a donation to her campaign, for those who can afford it, would be great. There is a donation link on YouTube. The donation link appears when you click "More info" that appears next to the video information "Added: April 06, 2008". Thanks.
