Texas Republicans let their racist flag fly free with convention pin
As if McCain allying with Clayton Williams (the infamous contender who compared running against Ann Richards for governor to rape---you know just lie back and enjoy the inevitable) for a fundraiser wasn't cool enough, now the Texas GOP convention brings us this little charming collectible:
Slick. Real classy.
Seriously...you raise kids with that mind? Hug your loved ones with the body that wears that pin? Live in the same world as me, my kids and my friends and family? Shame. Shame on you. Shame. Shame. Shame.

Attention, racists:
The more you try to pull these base, sleazy stunts, the harder the rest of us who are decent, tolerant folk will fight.

How absolutely appalling! I can only hope that come election time the Republicans hoist with their own petard!

That is disgusting. I feel physically ill.
I'm not sure what else to say. The people who would dream that up, sell it, and wear it are not fit to occupy the same space and breathe the same air as the rest of us. Disgusting.

You might also like the other GOP pin offering:
"Press 1 for English. Press 2 for Deportation"
Aren't they just the sweetest over there at that little ole GOP get-together?
Now at the Democrat one, I saw "Impeach Bush" and "Dems in the House" and "Impeach Perry" and sentiments about winning the elections but nothing like this.

I am truly speechless. There really are not words to express my disgust. And now I need to remember to close out the window to this site when I leave my computer so that my children will not see this. Absolutely appalling.

Yeah, Julie. I didn't see anything like that at the Democratic convention here either. They had the usual squishy Bush stress balls and stuff, but nothing like that.

I am aghast. And speechless, which is rare.

Holy ****! Seriously? That is appalling, disgusting, everything. And racism isn't alive and kicking?
And yeah-THIS is what we are teaching our kids? (Well, some of us)

Is this further evidence of what the "conservative" ideology is about? Who in this wide world of multicultural beings actually thinks that would be funny? I wonder how many kids got buttons...

Oh. My. God. This, this thing was manufactured in our 21st century United States?!! Oh. My. God.

I wanted to make a slight amendment to the description of the Clayton Williams quote about rape. It was made during his campaign against Ann Richards, but it was actually in the context of a hunting trip where there was inclement weather, which he compared to rape: “as long as it’s inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.”
This, plus his refusal to shake Richards' hand after a debate, is believed to have caused his loss to Richards. So I guess something good came out of his bad behavior, in the end.....

I'm Texan and I vote Conservative (which is not to say I always vote Republican - I vote "issues"). I don't want to vote for Obama NOR do I want to vote for McCain.
I would NEVER wear this pin, nor would any of my friends or people I know in TEXAS that are REPUBLICAN.
Posted by: OMSH | June 18, 2008 at 09:24 AM
OMSH, I'm a Texan too.
The truth is...this pin was for sale at the Republican convention. The party has to approve vendors when they get the booths, which they apply and pay for.
In my opinion, it casts aspersion on to the whole party that they allowed this. My indictment in this article is ---fairly so---of the Republican party that allowed this button at their convention, the people who made the button, and those who bought and wear it.
I'm glad that you wouldn't ever wear it. Like you, I never would and sincerely hope nobody I know would.
In fact, earlier today I wrote this (in reply to a comment):
"Well...to be fair...it's not TEXANS. It's obnoxious conservative racists who vote Republican. Texas has its racists but so does every state (and probably every country). There are those who will hate. In all honesty, I run into less racism in Texas than I have in other states."
The button is horrid. The sentiment behind it is even worse. What's worse still are the people who don't even get why it's offensive, and think it's all just being funny. I still call shame to them.
And one more sad downside to this are the things I've read around the Internet. This tarred all Texans with the same nasty brush. People are saying things like "backwards redneck Texans" and "of course racism in Texas..." and the one I found harshest, "...we could solve a lot of problems in this country if we just gave Texas back to Mexico."
Our reputation is not that great---sadly, and often erroneously---and this just did one strike worse.
Still, at base, like I said, the sentiment behind it is the worst of all.

Not all racists are Republicans, but all Republicans are racists.
