I really think the events of 9/11 are not being used to the same level they were in 2004's presidential campaign. On my Word Face-Off blog (http://wordfaceoff.blogspot.com/2008/09/911-vs-world-trade-center-or-twin.html), I compared the Google-popularity of "9/11," "Flight 93," etc. and there is a marked difference between 2004 and 2008.
