Yesterday I wrote a letter to my girls explaining why their Mamma and Papa are voting for Barack Obama. For me, it goes beyond his economic, green energy, and healthcare plans. For me, as a multicultural person, it's deeply personal. Here's an excerpt:
If all goes well, in just a few short days, we will have our first bi-racial, bi-cultural president. Finally, a president that I can relate to because I am bi-racial and bi-cultural and the experiences that shaped his young life are similar to the experiences that shaped mine. Bunny and Wallie, in Barack Obama, you can also see yourselves: a multicultural citizen of the world with a mind that is open to all ideas and with a heart that is capable of loving all people. That is my hope for you and that is why your parents voted for Barack Obama.

It was beautiful, Stefania. If you don't mind, I'm going to have to write a similar letter to my boys!

But just because a person is bi-racial and bi-cultural does not mean that they have the experience and ability to lead a country. Just because you think you and he can "relate" in your background and or your being raised, is a pretty lame reason to think he can lead a country. This is the problem......people voting for what THEY want, and not for what the candidate is capable of, or not capable of. Too bad for your daughters.

JDS, I don't think you've been reading MOMocrats for very long. Otherwise you'd see that there are dozens of other reasons why I am supporting Obama. (PS I didn't start out supporting him as I said in my post. I started out supporting a more progressive candidate and if I thought Kucinich had a shot at winning, I would have backed him, too.). This is just ONE reason that my young daughters can relate to. That PLUS what he is capable of. I cannot wait until people like you are proven wrong.
