Right now speculation is swirling. I'm sure more will emerge in the next few days as to the particulars of her decision. [Updated to add: the full text of her resignation speech is here.]
We mostly focus on Democratic women here at MOMocrats, but as this relates to the likelihood that Palin will run for higher office in 2012, as many in the GOP have thought she should, we provide this update. There's currently no way to know if this abrupt departure prior to the end of her term increases or decreases the chances she'll enter a national race. She's also been said to have told confidants that she's "out of politics" altogether.
(Video of the press conference after the jump.)
Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell will be sworn in on July 26, 2009.
For now, see video of her press conference announcing her decision here:

I can only hope and pray that she will be out of politics all together. That would be the best for us all, but like you said, it's too soon to tell, and I have my doubts.

NYC, I'm hoping the same. Maybe the talk show offer came through?

I think she has a plan...she's too ambitious to be "turned off" by politics. She's not high on my list of most accomplished states(wo)man. Maybe she'll become a media talking head! Just what we need, we could watch her gut a moose while discussing the "Middle Eastern" problem (that would be East Texas) where I come from.

Thanks for your comments, all.
It's interesting to see the consensus on what we all think are Palin's true aspirations: well-paid pseudo-celebrity-ish punditry! Sort of an underwhleming assessment of both her abilities and also what it takes to bloviate on Fox News.
Who knows? There are mutters that the Palins are being investigated for corrupt dealings in the building of their personal home in Wasilla and in the contracting process of the Wasilla Sports Complex--both built by the same company. We'll see if those pan out.
She received $11 million for a book about her experiences as Republican vice presidential nominee...given her skills as a writer relative to the money that she was paid, you'd think she'd get busy now to bridge the chasm.
PS Daisy, how's your garden this summer?

I admit this is a great moment of schadenfreude for me. That woman just gets under my skin and her swift departure from politics is not swift enough.
I'll throw my money in the pot guessing she's up for a 7-8 figure lobbying deal with the oil industry. She spent so much time in the beginning of her bizarro speech talking about Alaska's natural resources I can only imagine it was setting her up for the next speech.

I think she is focused on the celebrity mill. Of course someone is paying her that much for a book deal. It is the celebrity society we live in now, unfortunately. It seems odd to resign as Governor if she still had Presidential aspirations. However, I would not be surprised if another disclosure of impropriety comes forth during her term.

I don't get it. I has to be something other than running for president. Who would vote for someone who can't finish a job. Would she leave the White House, too, mid-term?

"Who would vote for someone who can't finish a job?" 48% of the US voted for her for vice president. McCain's choice of her was an outrageous insult, and yet they almost won. The press aren't doing their job, and the celebrity landscape of the media in the US serves us to a very bad end.
